Troublesome / painful / cracked tooth (Endodontic)
Region of interest
13, 12, 11
[Only visible to logged-in users]
1. Displaced vertical fracture at tooth 13
The endodontically treated tooth 13 exhibits a displaced vertical root fracture that extends through the buccal and lingual surfaces of the root. Note the extension of endodontic sealer into the fracture plane is pathognomonic for a vertical root fracture. The periapical periodontal ligament is widened. No unobturated canals are visible in the tooth. Tooth 13 has a hopeless prognosis.
Axial views of tooth 13
These axial cross-sectional images demonstrate the displaced vertical root fracture through the buccal and lingual root surfaces. Note the presence of endodontic sealer into the fracture plane. The periapical periodontal ligament is widened.
Mesiodistal views of tooth 13
These mesiodistal cross-sectional images demonstrate the displaced vertical fracture that extends from the buccal to the lingual root surface. Note the presence of beam hardening artifacts at the distal surface of the root of tooth 13 as a result of the adjacent implant at site 14.
Buccolingual views of tooth 13
These buccolingual cross-sectional images demonstrate that the adjacent buccal cortical plate near the apex of tooth 13 is thinned and may be partially dehiscent. The contiguous palatal cortical plate remains intact. Note the displaced vertical root fracture and the presence of endodontic sealer into the fracture plane. Tooth 13 has a hopeless prognosis.
Normal bone at sites 11 and 12
The bone at sites 11 and 12 appears normal radiographically. The density of the bone is similar to that of the adjacent trabecular bone.
2. Slightly thickened mucosal linings of maxillary sinuses
The mucosal linings of the maxillary sinuses are slightly thickened. This is a non-significant incidental finding.
