1. Simple bone cyst in posterior third quadrant
A well-defined unilocular radiolucent cystic entity is present in the posterior third quadrant in the periapical regions of teeth 36 and 37. This entity has scalloped around the roots of the teeth and into the interradicular region of teeth 36 and 37. Mild buccolingual expansion of the alveolar process has occurred, and endosteal scalloping is present in the buccal and lingual cortical plates. The lesion extends around the inferior alveolar nerve canal, but the osseous periphery of the canal may remain intact. No root resorption or damage has occurred to teeth 36 and 37, and the lamina dura has been maintained around the roots of the teeth in the region adjacent to the lesion, which is a characteristic feature of a simple bone cyst.
Normal tooth 37
These orthogonal cross sectional images demonstrate the maintenance of the lamina dura around the roots of tooth 37 in the region adjacent to the simple bone cyst. The scalloped periphery of the cyst in the region surrounding the mesial root of tooth 37 is also evident in these images. Note the mild buccolingual expansion of the alveolar process in the periapical region of tooth 37.
Normal tooth 36
These orthogonal cross sectional images demonstrate the maintenance of the lamina dura around the distal root of tooth 36, as well as the scalloped periphery of the simple bone cyst in the region adjacent to tooth 36. The anterior extent of the simple bone cyst is the periapical region of tooth 36.
