Impacted tooth 43

The crown of the mesioangularly impacted tooth 43 is positioned interproximal to the midroot level of teeth 42 and 44. No root resorption has occurred to adjacent teeth 42 or 44. The follicle surrounding the crown of tooth 43 abuts the follicle of a small supernumerary tooth (s) overlying the incisal edge of tooth 43. The root of tooth 43 is fully formed and the periodontal ligament space is intact around the entire root circumference, which suggests that the tooth is not ankylosed. The crown of tooth 43 can be surgically accessed from the buccal aspect of the alveolar process interproximal to the midroot level of teeth 42 and 44.

Supernumerary tooth at site 43

A small supernumerary tooth (s) is positioned occlusal to the cusp tip of tooth 43. The presence of this supernumerary tooth has caused impaction of tooth 43. The follicle surrounding the supernumerary tooth abuts the follicle surrounding the crown of tooth 43. The supernumerary tooth can be surgically accessed from the buccal aspect of the mandibular alveolar process, immediately inferior to the alveolar crest and distal to the coronal third of tooth 42.

Normal tooth 44

Tooth 44 has not been affected by the impacted tooth 43 or the supernumerary tooth (s). The middle and apical thirds of the root of tooth 43 are positioned apical to tooth 44. The supernumerary tooth is positioned mesial to the coronal third of the root of tooth 44.

Normal tooth 42

Tooth 42 has not been affected by the impacted tooth 43 or the supernumerary tooth (s). The cusp tip of tooth 43 is positioned distal to the midroot level of tooth 42. The supernumerary tooth is positioned distal to the coronal third of the root of tooth 42.

Axial views of anterior 4th quadrant

These axial cross sectional images demonstrate the presence of a small supernumerary tooth (s) overlying the incisal surface of impacted tooth 43. This supernumerary tooth is the cause of impaction of tooth 43. No root resorption is present on adjacent teeth 42 or 44.
